Heater Grid: disconnecting it, (benefits?)
I don't think I will ever forget to unplug ever again. if you have a marginal alternator that has to help power the grid heaters and recharge the batteries after using them, does that send higher AC ripple thru the ECM/ PCM?

Heater Grid: disconnecting it, (benefits?)
I like to plug in the block heater and not use the grid heaters, but I hate it when I leave it plugged in and drive off. BTW, don't ever run the extension cord from the rear of the truck and over the antenae, thinking your so smart, but forget and drive off....... It turns it into a windshield breakin' whip and bends the body. Then windshield company screws up and have to do it done twice. I thought I was so smart since I would see the cord over the antenea from the drivers seat.

AC ripple Testing
I think there is some problem with trusting the bench test guys, so knowing what a good DVM says while running in the truck is a better option and if you have to go that far to pull out the alternator for the test you may as well just change the diode Bridge and be done with it. The problem is if you change the bridge and the DVM says still too high of AC ripple then you have to remove again and change brushes and possible slip rings. Even though changing the diode bridge is going to solve most problems, as I understand it, you have a little better stab if you replace the brushes too I suppose. So where do you go for brushes?

AC ripple Testing
The article (above link) says .1 it's a fail. Why can't we just move them diodes outside the alternator so we can just pop in a new bridge whenever the Trans goes hunting? Maybe bad questioning here, but a cool AC ripple gauge would also be handy in the cab.

A ten star write up in my book. Thank you for loads of clarification.

Defueling at 1900 rpm fummins
I had to go out an buy a good DVM since my lesser expensive always showed every vehicle to have 30 volts AC. I found a good older Fluke for 40 bucks on Craigs. I lucked out.

Alternator not charging, testing voltage control.
Its a good article. Thank you. Here you are in Alaska and I thought I had a hard time last winter on my truck with just 3 inches on the ground.

Block plug boost adapter
BTW, aren't you the guy that uses 4'' galv pipe and threaded couplings. for the exhaust.... I think I heard about you

Elec./ Computer... lingering problem
I know that too..... but what about those connectors not being very snug and the battery grounding right there to help protect the electronics from some of the AC ripple...... that is my thought because when you slide those apart they really don't feel like a real good connection.

Elec./ Computer... lingering problem
I know of a few cases where they did that and solved a problem. In my case I read about a guy that cut those connectors out and solved the trouble he was having by wrapping them together like a licorice twist and soldered them together with shrink tubing, but Mike says it's not necessary to butcher up the wires like that so I have not done it to my other second gen. when I pull them apart, tho, they don't feel like a very tight connection to me.

Pilothouse/RAM3500 build
I remember when those trucks first came out because it was the talk of the town and local loggers, contractors, farmers where buying them up. It took till 1996 when I bought my first one.... a 92 5 spd. I drove for over 20 years. Loved that old truck.

Elec./ Computer... lingering problem
Keep trying they might be a bit slow to go since it was Thanksgiving holidays. I think where you live in Cali. that it would be a benefit to unhook your grid heaters. Anyhow it's warm climate and you don't need them. There was a discussion about how using them can cause excessive AC noise hurting the ECM and another problem...... the fuseable links can melt if grid heater starts going bad. Anyhow I know there is good reason the forum owner, while living in cold climate, unhooks them when temps average above 32* something like that. GSP7, Are you saying you are bumping the starter when it takes awhile to hear the lift pump and see the wait to start??

SOS Lonely P1693 code with no friends. Where to begin looking?
I'm remembering your caked up fuel filter and wondering how much restriction you might have inside the tank screens. My screens are all removed and primary filter added before the lift pump also half inch draw straw.

Defueling at 1900 rpm fummins
The video sounds like a major miss or fuel cut out at 1900 rpm.... I can only guess what it may be. Don't want to confuse the situation so I'm asking.... how could the ECM cause that sudden of a miss at 1900 rpm? Thanks Mike

Do what Mopar Mike says and you will find you are on the right Forum for good help, I wonder sometimes if folks are confusing the injection pump with the Lift pump. I wouldn't be thinking new injection pump until you know for sure that's whats wrong. I want to mention Eric at Vulcan Performance with recent name change, which I can't remember now, but that will get you there to look at the 1/2'' line kit and a halfway decent lift pump. Both my trucks are on the AD150 and seem okay so far. All from Eric. Michael... could fuel starvation cause the codes Leety is seeing also?

Yes that's good but I may be a bit off topic from Mopar Mikes angle by pointing out fuel delivery problem. However, it does need addressing as does all second gens.

I think you need to go thru more steps using process of elimination before jumping into any major expense or time for a new engine harness. Fuel pressure should be no lower than 15 and that's running uphill hauling heavy. Also no higher than 19. You may need to pull injectors and have them tested because I think its a fueling problem not electrical. But I'm just a minor educated diesel guy on this stuff. How many miles on that engine?

Has the truck been at or near the ocean most of its life? If you still have the in tank screens those could be clogged and it's fighting a fuel delivery problem starving the injection pump. That hurts the pump too. If you have to drive it at all please put in 1 quart of two stroke oil in the tank for lubricity bringing the fuel scoring value down. Should be done with each tank of fuel. Both my second gens have no screens, no factory banjo bolt fuel lines and no factory lift pump. All can help starve the VP44 and cause wear to the timing piston. My fuel lines are half inch.

Tyler's 4th Gen
Imagine an elect. moded truck owned by Dieselfuture....He'd plug in at night and we wouldn't be able to see the front door to our own house with the amount of power draw. lol

Happy Thanksgiving
I live like this too and once you do that you never want to go back living in town. The hard work part is very good for you and you get used to it, but the sense of satisfaction and freedom cannot be beat. This is my road going out of my place

Happy Thanksgiving
Interesting. Don't you usually get snow by now? I'm glad that can get out after some of the work around there anyway. I don't have a log splitter but I find its good for me to do that work by hand. Helps keep me strong, but I also live on the wet side where it only takes about 2 cord a year to heat my house.

More like Bring the Excavator, 1000 gal concrete tank and infiltrator drain channels. I think Dave's got his new fold out supervisors chair ready too.

Yum, I can test out my new metal molars. That good dentist of mine can remove chrome fragments. Thanks too becauseThat reminds me... I want to get my snap on magnet and see if its attracted to my new teeth.

Alternator Question
I had to replace one of the bearings on my tractor alternator and it wasn't difficult. Wanted to do both but the one still good one was pressed on, so I said forget it. I will try hammer tapping the socket next time. It's a good feeling knowing you figured it out and got it done. I know how good that is.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too Dave and everyone. We are going to have a full house here also.
