2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. I drained my fuel from my fuel tank into 5 gallon buckets because I needed to fix leaky sump and mount Airdog pump in better spot. When I got ready to pure fuel back in noticed rather large beads of whatever (water, dirt, etc) mixed in with fuel. Finding micron sizing stuff on line, I ran fuel thru coffee filters (supposed to be around 20 microns). The fuel still didn’t look good to me. I then removed Airdog pump from truck and hung it in the fence and with long wires and a remote 12 volt switch and have been running fuel thru the Airdog filters. Airdog says one if its filters is 2 micron. I believe that filter is the one with a water drain valve. Fuel now looks …

Looking for opinions on installing 4" exhaust. Any noticeable power increase over stock exhaust? Any noticeable drop in EGT? Aluminized or stainless? Muffler or straight pipe? Not worried about loudness as much as droning. What brand? Diamond Eyes, MBRP or something else? Thanks for any advice.

  3. I have a 01 Automatic. I replaced the auto and upgraded. I want to stick 80 to 100 Dap Injectors but i am worried about the turbo. The hy is a pos. Will a hx40 give me the boost i need?

I have a buddy who will sell me a Superchips d-box for around $100. Are they any good? I don't need a whole bunch more power, just a bit more than stock is fine.

  5. 02 3500 dually 6sp NV5600 Rear wheel drive 3.55 ratio dana 80 Are you or do you know of anyone running 3.31 ratio gears in a dana 80? I'm currently running 3.55's and would like to switch to 3.31's so I can run lower rpm's in 5th (1:1) gear while towing. If you have done this I would like to hear about what you think & how your truck is performing while running 3.31's. Thanks!

  6. Hi everyone I'm trying to sort out an fueling issue that is making me too scared to drive . I put a nice fresh engine in my "00 and I'm getting a pile of white smoke at idle and 1/4 throttle. It also sounds as if I have air in the injector lines at idle. The vp44 is one off my old engine with a p0216 code so I'm wondering if it's an injector that is damaged or if the vp is having problems fueling 150hp sticks? I'm new to the Moparman site but I'm very impressed by this community thanks for the info and your time!

Is it time for a new turbo? I have less than a 1 to 2 mm of play side to side. No play in and out. New noise sounds like a bad belt tentisioner. This happens when developing boost or decreasing boost. The sound is coming from where the turbo is located. It is building boost and running fine. It feels like the boost is coming on slower than normal but that could be in my mind.

Last night my buddy (so I can only go off what he tells me happened) had my truck and got a phone call this morning about a dead truck. Code read was p0122 early this morning (I believe this can be from spinning wheels in the snow?) and now the code is the p1693 companion code. I don't have a reader to check further into that one.He said that the truck just stalled out on him... literally just died.Quarter tank of fuel, 18psi fuel pressure when I bump the lift pump.No drips or leaks. I cracked numbers 1 and 3 injectors and he said he saw fuel from #1 but didn't say it was spraying or anything.Over the past 10-15k miles the truck has randomly died maybe 5 times but starts …

I've been learning a ton of information thanks to this forum. Here's where I'm at. Loss of power much more frequently as of last few days. Originally key trick gave me P1693 and p2016. I've had this truck about 7 months now. Replaced lift pump with a fass ddrp soon after I got it as a precaution due to advice by a friend about lift pump failures. Hadn't even checked for codes at that point. Since then I wish I would have upgraded a bit more and relocated it. Still in stock location as of now. Anyhow I had started to notice a brief bit of white smoke on startup and truck has no power at times. Always starts right away. I have checked fuel pressure and have 17 psi idle and …

Long story short, I am doing the vulcan draw straw mod in my fuel module and i have to make a bracket to hold the supply and return lines in place. Is mild steel okay to use for this? It would be 2-3" from the bottom of the basket of the fuel module so it would basically always be covered in diesel (I don't imagine it would corrode). It would be incredibly cheaper and easier for me to make it out of mild steel vs aluminium or stainless. I'd enjoy hearing thoughts on this. While we're on the topic, they mention drilling holes in the side of the fuel basket, but this seems like it would be more prone to let fuel out than in. Is it necessary to drill the hol…

I have a 2001 Dodge ram Cummins 24v AT with a check engine light codes : P1693, P0236, P0112, P1488. I brought it to a mechanic and he told me 3.7 volts are coming out of the ECM. I just want to make sure that maybe a short or something else before I invest in a new ECM. I also have a smarty tuner tuned to level 5.

I was directed to an article posted by Mopar1973Man that was on a different forum. it concerns a P1690 engine code. it says that AC noise from my lift pump can also cause this. where does alternating current come frome on a direct current vehicle. The alternator? And why does it manifest itself in the fuel tranfer pump?

When my truck is plugged in and has sat all weekend, it will fire right up. I went to leave work today, the wts light ran for a normal amount of time but the truck fired for a second and died. It did that 3 times, the 4th time it fired up and ran a tad rough for a moment and then smoothed right out. I figured if I was losing fuel prime it would do that all the time, especially when sitting for extended periods.

hey all. i dont usually have any question on working on these engines, but today im a little puzzled. i changed the stock lift pump on my 2001 with a raptor 100. i had this lift pump on my other 2001, but i just got that one an air dog 150. anyhow, ive changed lift pumps/filters on these trucks 20+ times and have done the bleeding procedure as anyone would. crack lines 1,3,4 bump a couple times till you get some fuel, crank until air is gone and fuel is clear, close lines, start. today after i got done finishing my lift pump install i did just as i stated and i was getting some fuel/air from all three. line 4 started to get good fuel and it was acting like it w…

While looking at different fuel line set ups noticed a "ported" banjo bolt for the VP 44. I'm in process of installing 1/2 inch line from tank to VP44 via Airdog 100. In my head (maybe incorrectly) that a bigger fuel line equals more fuel available. My truck is all stock except for fuel line. I'm all for more volume and less restriction to get fuel from point A to point B. (Question) But is going from a (port) hole of .137 of an inch to .185 of an inch really worth it for a stock set up?

99 dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel. 5.9 24v. I am curious if this is a head gasket or freeze plug leak. its leaking coolant from back of block. tech reckons plug. That corrosion however looks ominous. Ive been quoted $2600 to repair with removing head etc. the pics are from below. As a complete novice can i drive the truck to another shop for a 2nd estimate.

  19. So for my 99 build I decided to buy new head bolts from PureDieselPower that are Cummins OEM head bolts for 98.5-15 and according to the gauge from Cummins they're stretched?????? Here's a picture of the gauge and if you're reading it like I am, here's a picture of the BRAND NEW head bolt I just got out of the Cummins labeled box and according to the gauge its stretched! Am I missing something? Not using the gauge right? I'm getting aggravated because I haven't done anything to the motor in awhile because I've been waiting on these bolts and apparently they're stretched!

It feels like my truck is shifting funny.. seems a little inconsistent through all the gears at times. And.. while cruising at 55-60 if I let off the throttle for a second and reapply the throttle it downshifts to 3rd. here's a short clip
